There are two types of Squirrels in North America ; the ground squirrels and the tree squirrels.

Florida has no members of the ground squirrel family with one exception of the Chipmunk .There are no chipmunks at all in most of  Florida Chipmunks are found in just the panhandle.  Chipmunks consume flower bulbs, fruits, seeds, and seedlings. When chipmunks present in large numbers, they can also cause structural damage by burrowing under patios, stairs, retention walls, or foundations.

The Tree Squirrels which include some of the most common tree squirrel species known to man The Gray Squirrel, The Flying Squirrel, Red or Pine Squirrels and Fox Squirrel. Florida does not have any pine squirrels and only has the gray squirrel, fox squirrel and the Flying Southern Squirrel.

 

Squirrel Damage to Structures

In residential areas, tree squirrels sometimes travel power lines and short out the electric transformers that bring electricity to your home or business.They gnaw on wire, and frequently build nests in attics and frequently gnaw or chew up electrical, cable and other wiring. Flying squirrels leave feces mixed with their urine which causes stains.

Squirrels can chew on electrical wires leading to fires and if left in a attic long enough they can weaken support rafters due to their gnawing activities.

Squirrel Damage To Commercial Crops

In gardens, and commercial farms squirrels may eat planted seed. mature fruits, or even grains like corn. Squirrels are a bug and costly economic  pest in nut orchards by either eating premature nuts or carrying off the mature nuts. Pine squirrels are known for the ovaries of the cherry blossoms and destroying ripe pears. Pine, gray and fox squirrels also damage trees in orchards by destroying and gnawing the bark off of nut orchard trees.

Florida Southern Flying Squirrel Removal

 

The Florida Southern Flying Squirrel is  nocturnal which means they sleep during the day and roam and cause havoc for home owners at night.The Florida Southern Squirrel . The Southern Flying Squirrel  does not  fly but actually glides  from tree top to tree top descending lower and lower among st a large group of tall, hardwood trees. The Florida Southern Flying Squirrel has a voracious appetite is always looking for new food sources. they eat nuts,berries,mushrooms,insects,carrion,eggs of birds and sometimes they eat and consume  hatching’s or fledglings as well.

 

There scientific name is glaucomys volans lol sounds scary compared to just saying the Florida southern flying squirrel. Their weight and length isn’t very heavy  much either weighing just over 4 ounces and in length  from 8-10 inches long. There live span can go as long as 12 years longer than some squirrels in the world. They  will breed during the spring and fall and can have as little as 3 babies up to 7 pups as they are called. They can be found in old woodpecker nests,which is again different than some other Florida squirrels that build there own nests. The male isn’t a part of the rearing of the young ones but they will stay with there mother several months while the rearing process in unfolding. These squirrels  do not hibernate at all,yet if temperature drop in a harsh winter two things happen. (1) they can going into a state of stupor until temps raise to a better degrees and (2) as many as 12 or less will huddle in the same nest to stay warm. The teeth of these grow all the time as well as the gray Florida squirrels where they chew on things to keep them shaved down. In captivity this squirrel suffers a lack of diet which causes a metabolic bone disease
